Varicose Veins Diagnosis and Treatments

Varicose veins disease, briefly described as the dilation of the veins in the lower extremities, is a chronic and progressive condition.

Diagnosis is straightforward. The veins in the lower extremities become swollen, bulging, and visible. However, in planning treatment, we need to use some examination tests and methods to understand certain aspects such as blood flow rate in the veins, vein diameters, and the presence of clots (thrombosis) inside them (such as phlebography, Doppler ultrasound, etc.).

These tests and methods determine the degree of varicose veins. The condition of the communican veins that provide connection between superficial and deep veins, and the blood flow rate in the deep veins, as well as the presence of thrombosis, are examined.

These investigations determine the treatment plan.

In the initial stages of varicose veins, we treat patients by resting with their legs elevated, using some medications called phlebotropic agents, and especially with varicose vein stockings for prevention. This combination of treatment is synergistic and can provide relief to the patient for a long time, as varicose veins are a chronic condition.

In patients who do not benefit from this combination treatment or whose symptoms worsen, other treatments come into play, starting with surgical treatments:

  1. Stripping methods
  2. Cryosurgery
  3. Ambulatory phlebectomy
  4. Laser surgery

Regardless of which surgical and medical methods are used, varicose vein stockings are an indispensable instrument. Because stockings worn with appropriate pressure and quality provide undeniable mechanical support to problematic veins. Even to patients undergoing surgery, we provide stockings for this reason.
